MASSENA — Swift Optical, 351 East Orvis St., is now doing eye exams via telemedicine.
“We figured out the hard way that there is a shortage of qualified optometrist in upstate New York,” Swift Optical owner Joseph Ianni said in a prepared statement. “The older doctors are retiring and not being replaced. The mid-career doctors are building their own practice and do not want to provide eye exams to a local retail eyewear store like Swift Optical. And the recently graduated optometrists are not making their way to establish practices upstate.”
Eye exam technology has taken “a huge leap” in the last 12 months with the addition of Telemedicine eye exams, according to a release from the store.
A trained technician assists Swift Optical patients while the eye doctor, located in Long Island, performs the exam remotely via video streaming and controlling the equipment over the internet.
“This was the most pleasant eye exam I have ever had. I loved the experience. I would highly recommend it,” patient Ruthie Lamb of Massena said in a prepare statement from Swift.
A large selection of frames is available once the exam is complete.
“Technology has finally caught up with my vision for the company,” Ianni said in the release.
Patients can often purchase eyewear from Swift for less than the co-pay on their insurance, “thereby saving their insurance for a rainy day,” the release said.
The store’s website and phone number are www.swift-optical.com or call 315-276-3335.
